What is CBD oil?
CBD (or cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating compound found in relative abundance in the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa).
Although research is still in its infancy, studies indicate that it may have the potential to help manage a variety of health conditions, including anxiety, inflammation, insomnia and chronic pain.

What is a normal starting dose for CBD oil?
CBD oil dosage differs for each person, depending on a range of factors, including weight, height, and reasons for taking CBD.
For those new to CBD, we recommend starting with a low CBD oil dose (e.g. 20 mg per day) and increasing this gradually until the optimal CBD dosage is found.
Alternatively, use our CBD Oil Dosage Calculator UK above to find a tailored starting dose.
The FSA recommends a maximum total daily CBD dose of 70mg. This includes any additional products, so please ensure that you never exceed this amount.
While following this guidance, you can manage your daily CBD dosage based on what works best for you, and combine various CBD products if desired.
How to find your optimal CBD oil dosage
Start low, go slow
To find your optimal CBD dosage, we recommend that you take a low starting dose for at least a week.
If you do not notice any benefits after this period of time, increase your dosage by a small amount every few days until the desired effects are achieved.
If you think you may have taken too much CBD, or experience any adverse side-effects, such as lightheadedness or a dry mouth, we recommend that you lower your CBD dosage immediately.
You can also use the CBD dosage chart below to find a suitable starting dose based on your weight.
Can I take too much CBD?
Yes, it is possible to take too much CBD. While the effects are unlikely to be serious, exceeding the recommended daily dosage may cause unpleasant side effects, including nausea, lightheadedness and diarrhoea.
Therefore, we recommend using a dosage that’s tailored to your needs and staying below the recommended maximum dosage of 70mg CBD per day in order to minimise the risk of experiencing side effects.
How to take CBD oil
1. Find the right CBD dosage
CBD oil dosage depends on many different factors, including weight, height, and reasons for consumption. Use our CBD Dosage Calculator UK to find your optimal dosage.
2. Put drops under the tongue
Lift your tongue to the roof of your mouth and place the required number of drops beneath it.
3. Leave under the tongue for 1 minute
Leave the oil under your tongue for one minute before swallowing. This allows the CBD to be fully absorbed by the oral mucosa. It can take 15-30 minutes for CBD to take effect.
When to take CBD oil
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to taking CBD. Some people may add it to their daily supplement routine and take it in the morning, while others may choose to take CBD before bedtime. This could be because CBD has been shown to have a calming effect on the central nervous system, which could in turn aid sleep.
Another approach is to take small doses of CBD at regular intervals throughout the day to maintain a steady dosage. All of these are perfectly fine and are down to each individual's preference. The important thing is to make sure you do not exceed the recommended daily dosage.
Best ways to take CBD oil
There are many different ways to take CBD oil. Common means of administration include CBD capsules, CBD oil drops, CBD balms, CBD edibles and CBD vapes.
1. CBD capsules
CBD capsules are a good place to start for people new to CBD, as they are easy to take and offer a simple way to manage your dosage.
As CBD capsules pass through the digestive system before entering the bloodstream, they usually take 1-2 hours to start working. These effects can last for 2-8 hours.
2. CBD oils
CBD oil drops have higher bioavailability than most other means of administration, which means that they increase the amount of CBD that enters the bloodstream.
As CBD oil is administered under the tongue, this allows the CBD to bypass the digestive process and enter directly into the bloodstream via the oral mucosa.
As a result, the effects may be felt more quickly than other means of taking CBD – usually within 15-30 minutes.

Why am I not feeling the effects of CBD?
If you’ve been taking CBD for a while and haven’t noticed any benefits, this could be down to a number of reasons:
1. Your daily dosage may be too low
Try using our CBD Oil Dosage Calculator above to find a starting dose that’s tailored to your needs.
Then try increasing this dosage gradually every few days until you start to feel the effects.
Just make sure you stay under the FSA’s maximum recommended dosage of 70mg CBD per day.
2. You may not have taken CBD for long enough
CBD accumulates in the body over time, so the longer you use it, the more likely it is that you’ll feel the desired effects.
In a survey we conducted in 2021, we found that customers who had been using our CBD products for 4 months or longer reported the most health benefits.
3. You may be using the wrong product for your needs
Some CBD products work differently to others, so it’s important to find the product that best matches your needs.
For example, if you’re looking to soothe aching muscles or irritated skin, topical CBD products such as CBD muscle balm or CBD daily moisturiser are a great way to target problem areas and therefore would be the best starting point.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for more generalised or systemic effects on the body, ingestible products like CBD oils, capsules or snacks may be more effective.
4. You may be using a poor quality product
Due to a lack of proper regulation, there are countless poor quality products on the CBD market, many of which have misleading label claims and no proof of third-party testing.
This means that many products contain less CBD than claimed on the label. Moreover, this CBD is likely to be of low quality and purity, which can further reduce the product’s effectiveness.
Make sure you buy from a trusted seller who sells plant-based CBD and offers proof of independent laboratory testing (usually in the form of a certificate of analysis).
5. You may have unrealistic expectations
Unfortunately, the growing hype around CBD has engendered a large amount of over-advertising which exaggerates its potential health benefits, leading many people to have unrealistic expectations.
Contrary to some of these over-hyped claims, CBD is not a “miracle extract”, “magic oil” or “cure-all”, and it doesn’t start working immediately.
CBD affects everyone differently, so don’t expect to have exactly the same experience with it as someone else. Just be patient, experiment, and see what CBD could do for you.
How long will a bottle of CBD oil last?
To find out how long a bottle of CBD oil will last, take the total number of milligrams of CBD contained in the bottle and divide it by your daily dose.
For example, if your daily CBD dosage is 21mg, and you take 5 drops of 10% CBD oil (1000 mg) daily, divide 1000 by 21 and you get 48 – so the bottle would last 48 days.
Which CBD oil strength should I choose?
If you’re new to CBD, we would recommend choosing a low strength oil so you can see how your body reacts, as CBD affects everyone differently.
However, it is important to note that choosing a suitable oil strength is not as important as taking the right number of CBD oil drops. This is because oil strengths differ in terms of how much CBD they contain per drop.
For example, one drop of 10% CBD oil contains as much CBD as two drops of
How many milligrams (mg) of CBD are in a drop of CBD oil?
The amount of CBD contained within each drop varies depending on the strength of the oil. The table below shows the CBD concentration per drop for different oil strengths. The higher the strength, the more CBD per drop.
How much does CBD oil cost?
The table below shows the price of CBD oil per milligram (mg) for various strengths and the amount of CBD contained within each drop.
As you'd expect, higher strength oils are more expensive than lower strength oils, because they contain more CBD per drop, but you do save overall when buying higher strength oils as the price per mg is lower.
The table below may also be used for translating dosages across different CBD products. For example, we can calculate that one 10mg CBD capsule contains the same dosage as 5 drops of 5% CBD oil, and that one 25mg CBD capsule contains the same amount of CBD as 2 drops of 30% CBD oil.
